Domestic and international flights from Tribhuvan International Airport were widely affected on Friday due to adverse weather conditions in various parts of the country.

According to airport spokesperson Satish Kumar Basnet, many flights were diverted or returned without landing, especially on routes to Kathmandu, after a dangerous cloud system was activated.

According to Basnet, a Buddha Air ATR plane coming to Kathmandu from Bhairahawa returned to Janakpur, while another Buddha Air ATR plane from Chandragadhi in Jhapa also returned to Chandragadhi after landing was impossible.

Similarly, another Buddha Air plane flying from Biratnagar to Kathmandu was also returned to Biratnagar, while a Biratnagar-Kathmandu flight of the airline also returned to Biratnagar without landing at its destination.

A Shree Airlines flight from Dhangadhi to Kathmandu has also been diverted to Dhangadhi due to bad weather. On the international side, a China Eastern Airlines flight from Kunming to Kathmandu has returned to Kunming. Similarly, Indigo Air's Delhi-Kathmandu flight was held for about 30 minutes in the sky over Mahottari and was finally diverted to Delhi.

Currently, the visibility on the air route entering Kathmandu is about 4,000 meters, which is generally considered sufficient for landing. However, the risk of flying has increased due to the active cumulonimbus clouds that bring thunderstorms and lightning on the route.

Since such clouds produce heavy rain, hail and strong winds, pilots have to change the route while maintaining a safe distance.

Due to adverse weather conditions en route, domestic flights departing from Kathmandu have also been grounded at Tribhuvan International Airport as a precaution.

‘Currently, flights have been affected due to the weather. The necessary decision has been taken keeping safety in mind. Flights will gradually return to normal once the weather improves,’ said spokesperson Basnet.
