Study begins to determine support price of Chaite paddy

The Department of Agriculture under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has begun a study to determine the support price of Chaite paddy. The department has started a field study in 25 different districts to ensure fair prices to farmers.

During the study, the department has stated that the minimum support price will be determined based on production costs by analyzing the costs of paddy production and seeds, fertilizers, labor, inflation and market prices. The scientific price determined after the field study by the department's team will be recommended and sent to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, informed the department's Director General Prakash Sanjel.

He expressed confidence that the field study process will help ensure the correct price of paddy produced by farmers. The ministry will propose a per quintal price by including production cost, transportation cost, market price and other relevant bases, said the department's Director General Sanjel.

'The said proposal will be submitted to the Council of Ministers. After that, it will be made public after a decision is made by the Council of Ministers. The moisture standards of rice will also be evaluated on the same basis,' he said.

The specified price will be applied if the moisture content of rice is up to 18 percent. If the moisture content is more than 18 percent, the weight reduction rule will be applied. After the entire process is completed, the Council of Ministers will fix the price. The price thus fixed will be officially made public, informed Sanjel, Director General of the Department.

The government has stated that rice will be purchased through the Food Management and Trade Company Limited at the price fixed. Last year, the government had fixed the support price of Rs 2,800 per quintal.
