Preparations have been made to build infrastructure in the risky areas of the BP highway before the coming rains and operate transport vehicles on the highway itself. Permanent reconstruction work is currently underway on the highway damaged by repeated floods and landslides.

Senior Divisional Engineer Suman Yogesh, Chief of the Division Road Office, Bhaktapur, said that the construction work has been accelerated.

According to him, the road reconstruction work will be completed within two years, looking at the work being done on the highway. Yogesh said that a total of 25 percent of the work has been completed on the three road sections that have been contracted towards Kavrepalanchok so far.

Permanent reconstruction work has begun at three locations on the damaged road section of the highway, which is a short distance connecting the eastern and mid-hill regions of Nepal with the federal capital Kathmandu.

After the floods and landslides that occurred in Asoj 2081 and further damage during this year's rains, the permanent reconstruction process has been started since last Mangsir. Yogesh informed that the construction of the 3.2-kilometer road from Barkhekhola to Piple, which will be reconstructed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), will be concluded within this month.

Work is underway to install 'RCC' walls in various damaged areas, while work has begun to install plumb walls from the river in Chowkidanda and 'RCC' walls in Charsayabesi and Bhakundebesi. Similarly, work is underway to widen the road in Dalabesi, Mangaltar section, and Charsayabesi to Narke section, Yogesh said.

According to him, structures have been designed to prevent flood damage in places where the floods last year and this year 'washed out' (complete road damage). The target is to complete the reconstruction of the damaged sections of the highway in Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli within the next two years. According to the office, work has been started simultaneously in three sections for the reconstruction of the damaged highway. This year, the work of constructing structures and widening the road in the damaged areas will be completed, and the work has been accelerated by constructing structures and blacktopping in some remaining areas next year, Yogesh said. The landslide had damaged about 30 kilometers of the road in the Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli sections of the highway.

The next reconstruction will involve upgrading the highway and constructing a two-lane road. 'A two-lane road will be constructed on the road section to be reconstructed, and another bridge will be built along with the existing bridge,' said Chief Senior Divisional Engineer Yogesh.

According to him, there is also a plan to convert five bridges into two lanes. The office said that the contract for the reconstruction of the 8.5 km road from Dalabesi to Charsayabesi has been awarded to the Khani-Avon-Kamaljit JV at a cost of Rs 1.42 billion 3.7 million (including VAT). Similarly, the contract for the reconstruction of the 11.08 km road from Charsayabesi to Bhakundebesi has been awarded to the Lama-Nawakantipur JV at a cost of Rs 1.33 billion 5.3 million. It is reported that a contract agreement has been signed with the Kharidhunga-Ghising-Kshitij JV to reconstruct the 4.90 km road from Nepalthok to Barkhekhola at a cost of Rs 610 million (including VAT). Out of the damaged 29.5 km road, a memorandum of understanding has been signed for JICA to provide a grant of Rs 2.63 billion for the 3.2 km road from Barkhekhola to Piple. The government had already awarded contracts for the sections other than the road section to be constructed by JICA before last Asoj.

The government has given a resource agreement of Rs 8.5 billion for the reconstruction of the damaged section. Of this, Rs 7.5 billion has been given for the three road sections towards Kavrepalanchok and Rs 1 billion for one road section in Sindhuli.

The construction of the BP Highway (Dhulikhel-Sindhuli-Bardibas 160 km) was started in 2053/54 with the grant assistance of the Government of Japan. The completed highway, which was divided into sections, was formally handed over to the Government of Nepal on Asad 18, 2072. The highway is considered a short route connecting the central capital Kathmandu with the mid-hills and eastern Nepal.
