The 17th meeting of the Nepal-India Electricity Exchange Committee (PEC) has fixed the electricity tariff for 2026. The meeting has increased the price per unit by only 1.5 percent for 2026 compared to 2025.

The meeting fixed the rate of electricity purchased through the 132 kV transmission line at 8.22 rupees (13 rupees 15 paise) per unit, at the 33 kV level at 8.91 rupees (11 rupees 58 paise) per unit and at the 11 kV level at 9.55 rupees (15 rupees 28 paise).

The meeting was led by Hitendra Dev Shakya, Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, on behalf of Nepal. The meeting was led by Vijay Kumar Singh, Board Member of the Central Electricity Authority, on behalf of India. The price of electricity purchased through the 132 kV transmission line for 2025 was set at 8.1 rupees (12 rupees 96 paise) per unit. The price of electricity through the 33 kV transmission line was fixed at 8.78 rupees (14 rupees 04 paisa) per unit and the price of electricity imported and exported through the 11 kV transmission line was fixed at 9.41 rupees (15.05 rupees). The price was also increased by 1.5 percent for 2025.

The then Executive Director Kulman Ghising was also asked for an explanation by the then Energy Minister Deepak Khadka for agreeing to a high rate at that time. The meeting held in Pokhara on 28 and 29 Falgun was attended by Senior Divisional Engineer Sanjeev Rai of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation and a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and First Secretary of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Suman Shekhar.

With the fixing of the price, it is expected to further strengthen Nepal's electricity supply management during the dry season in the coming Chait-Baishakh months. Currently, the NEA is importing about 12 to 14 thousand megawatt hours of electricity per day. This amount will increase further as the energy demand increases during the dry season.

The process of purchasing electricity through PEC for electricity exchange between Nepal and India has been continuously operating since 1992. The NEA also says that this mechanism, which has been in operation for more than three decades, has been established as an important basis for Nepal-India energy cooperation.

The meeting determined the electricity purchase rate for the coming year, said NEA Executive Director Shakya. “After detailed discussions, the rate set last year has been increased by only 1.5 percent, which is the same as the previous year,” he said. He said that there is also pressure to make this agreement to import electricity for the dry season due to the global problem in fuel supply due to the ongoing war in West Asia.

During the talks, the Indian side had proposed a 5.5 percent increase in the electricity purchase rate, citing the increase in costs including electricity production and supply. However, the Nepali side argued that there was no need for a rate increase, stating that the current market rate was relatively low based on the study of the Indian electricity market and available market indices.

It will now be sent to the Electricity Regulatory Commission. Shakya said that electricity can be purchased through PEC from April 1 after approval from the commission. “The price fixed for 2026 will be applicable until next March,” he said, “We can bring up to 350 megawatts of electricity through this. This has been ensured with the price being fixed.”
