The Annapurna region, a world-famous destination for trekking tourism, has received 2.632 million foreign tourists in the last 25 years.
According to the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), 2025 saw the highest number of 299,831 tourists, compared to 65,313 in 2001.
The lowest number of tourists in the region was 16,105 in 2021, according to ACAP data.
The number of tourists visiting the region that year fell sharply due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2001 to 2010, the number of tourists visiting the region was less than 100,000 annually, but in the 2011 Visit Nepal Year, the number of tourists exceeded 100,000. That year, 101,908 tourists visited the region.
Then, due to the Gorkha earthquake in 2015, the number of tourists decreased to 78,930. Since then, the number of tourists, which had been increasing every year, decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.
After 2022, the number of tourists seems to have increased again. In 2022, 129,723 tourists visited the Annapurna region, in 2023, 191,558 tourists visited it, in 2024, 244,039 tourists visited it, and last year, 299,831 tourists visited it.
Dr. Robin Kadaria, head of ACAP, informed that among the tourists who visited last year, 177,628 were from South Asian countries and 122,203 were from other countries. He said that a new record was set in tourist arrivals in 2025. 'Tourist arrivals are increasing every year, from those who enjoy trekking to religious tourists come to this region,' he said.
Millions of domestic and foreign tourists visit Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal, Ghandruk, Tilicho Lake in Manang, Thorangla Bhanjyang, Upper Mustang, Muktinath area, and Ghodepani in Myagdi every year on the Annapurna Cycle Trail.
The Annapurna Conservation Area Project only keeps statistics on foreign tourists visiting these destinations. The Annapurna Conservation Area, spread over 7,600 square kilometers, is considered an attractive destination for trekking. The Annapurna region is a favorite destination for tourists due to its natural beauty, biodiversity, mountain life, culture, etc.
Short, medium and long-distance trekking in the Annapurna region can be done from any public route including Kaski, Lamjung, Manang, Myagdi. The Annapurna Circular Trek is considered excellent for trekking in terms of attractive destinations, tourism-friendly infrastructure, local hospitality and service facilities. The Annapurna Conservation Area covers 87 wards of 15 local levels of Kaski, Lamjung, Manang, Myagdi and Mustang.
