Sigana means 'Orange Village'. Farmers in Sigana, Baglung Municipality-8, which has already earned a reputation as the Orange Village, are increasing their orange production every year.

Last year, Ananta Khadka, who had entrusted the orange orchard to a businessman from Dhading for Rs 500,000, sold the orange orchard in one lump sum for Rs 750,000. This year, Rs 40 million has been brought into Sigana from the sale of oranges.

Khadka expressed happiness that the price of oranges has been good this year along with the production. He said that more than 100 farmers like him have brought in an amount of Rs 100,000 to 700,000 to the village.  Other farmers have also been bringing in a small amount.

The statistics on orange production are kept by the village's Ganesh Agricultural Cooperative, not the ward office. Since Sigana's oranges are delicious, the market for oranges here is in Pokhara, Kathmandu and Chitwan. The farmers here, who have been engaged in commercial orange farming since 2050 after destroying millet fields and rice fields, are now expanding orange farming in a big way. In Sigana, orange cultivation is expanding to cover the entire village in the next five years. Orange planting is currently underway in Besi, Patle, Pakhabari, Bansbot and Saykot of Sigana.

The farmers of Sigana, who earned Rs 35 million from the sale of oranges last year, have earned Rs 40 million this year. Local leader Shiva Kumar Khadka said that the overall orange production in Sigana worth Rs 5 million has increased compared to last year. He informed that they have been expanding orange cultivation through cooperatives and are also distributing orange seedlings under subsidy.

Compared to last year, the increase in orange production is due to the good weather and the absence of diseases. Contractors have been grading the oranges here and sending them to other markets including Pokhara at different prices. Saying that the ward office has not been able to keep statistics on oranges, Ram Bahadur Khadka, chairman of Ganesh Agricultural Cooperative Sigana, said that since the work of collecting statistics on oranges in Sigana has started last year, more than 40 million rupees have been brought in from the sale of oranges this year.

More than 250 farmers have small to large orange gardens in Sigana. This year, 400 new plants have started producing oranges. Oranges are produced well in the former 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th wards of Sigana village. Most of the farmers here are affiliated with the cooperative and orange production is increasing annually, informed former ward chairman and orange farmer Jit Bahadur GC.

Farmers here, including Top Bahadur Khadka, Ram Prasad Gautam, Radha Khadka and Ganga KC, have been marketing oranges through traders in Pokhara, Chitwan, Narayangadh and Dhading. It has been found that orange farming is flourishing due to garden expansion and fertilizer.
