The construction of all bridges in the eastern section of the Narayanghat-Butwal road section, which the government has promoted as a national pride, has been completed.
Of the 34 bridges that have been completed, 33 have been opened to traffic, the eastern section of the Narayanghat-Butwal Road Project has said.
According to the project's information officer, Engineer Shiva Khanal, with the completion of the slope of the eighth span of the Arun Khola Bridge in the eastern section, all the bridges in the eastern section of the Narayanghat-Butwal Road Project have been completed. The construction company China State Engineering Construction Corporation Limited was awarded the contract to build 22 small bridges up to 25 meters long and 12 bridges longer than 25 meters in this section. Khanal informed that all 34 bridges, including 22 small and 12 large ones, have been completed.
Although the construction of the small bridges has been completed and put into operation, not all the bridges have been put into operation as the construction of the large bridges is in progress. "With the Girubari Khola Bridge in Chormara Bazaar being operational last week, traffic has been operating from 33 bridges," said Engineer Khanal. "We have accelerated the work of finishing the bridge and constructing the approach road so that traffic can be operated from the Arun Khola Bridge before the election on Falgun 21." Khanal informed that the road expansion work in the eastern section is progressing at a rapid pace.
Due to the difficult geographical conditions in Daunne of this section, some culvert construction work is still pending in Daunne, and the construction of those culverts is also in the final stages, Khanal said. Khanal said that almost all the 65-kilometer road from Narayanghat to Daunne can be traveled on blacktop roads except Daunne. 'Road expansion work has also increased rapidly in Daunne,' he said. 'Due to the difficult terrain in Daunne, road expansion work is being done by making slopes instead of blacktops, which is why the expansion work in this area is being delayed.'
Information Officer Engineer Khanal informed that the physical progress of the eastern section of the Narayanghat-Butwal road expansion project has reached 76 percent so far. Khanal said that travel has become easier as blacktop work has been completed in both directions in all places except the Daunne road section, some parts of Arunkhola and some parts of Dumkibas in the eastern section. He said that in the Daunne area, road slope work is still pending, so travel has not been easy.
He said that lane marking work is being done to separate the road lanes in places where the road has been blacktopped in both directions and additional service lanes are being constructed in places where there will be service lanes. Of the 14 km of Daunne road, four kilometers of the road is in the eastern section.
Work is currently underway in Daunne to cut the remaining hills, build the remaining culverts, widen the road, and fill the nets from below in places where landslides can occur. 215 culverts will be built in this section.
The Nepalese government had signed an agreement with the Chinese construction company China State Engineering Construction Corporation Limited on Magh 24, 2079 for the expansion of the Narayanghat-Butwal road. The road expansion work, which was agreed to be completed within 42 months of the start of construction, has been progressing at a very slow pace. After the work was not completed on time, the government has extended the deadline of the construction company four times and has extended the deadline for the last time to complete it by Shrawan 8.
The 114-kilometer-long Narayanghat-Butwal road has been divided into two sections and the contract has been awarded. China State Engineering Construction Corporation Limited has been given the responsibility of both sections. The cost of both sections is around Rs 17 billion, and the road expansion work is being carried out with 85 percent loan assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
