Although the number of digital device imports has increased modestly in the current fiscal year 2082/83, the import prices of smartphones, laptops, routers, etc. have been increasing. While this has increased government revenue somewhat, it indicates that the financial burden on consumers may increase as technology devices become more expensive.
In the last 6 months, there has been a moderate increase in the global prices of computers, digital devices and smartphones due to shortage of RAM (memory), adjustments in the supply chain and increasing demand for premium devices. This has also affected the Nepali market.
According to the data released by the Customs Department on Wednesday, 1,252,634 smartphones have been imported into Nepal in the first 6 months of the current fiscal year. Its import value is 23.29 billion 83.22 million. The government has collected 4.34 billion 59.56 billion in revenue from this.
The import of smartphones was slightly lower in the same period of the previous fiscal year. At that time, 1,111,556 smartphones were imported for 16.71 billion 39.30 billion. Last year, the government had earned 3.11 billion 68.49 million in revenue from this.
Compared to the previous fiscal year, the import value of smartphones has increased by about 24 percent. In the month of Asoj of the current fiscal year, 848,060 smartphones worth Rs 13.62 billion 75.38 million were imported.
Since Asoj, the import price per smartphone has increased by 15-16 percent. Due to this, the price of smartphones has increased slightly in the market. In the first 6 months of the current fiscal year, 75,567 laptops and notebooks have entered Nepal. Its import value is Rs 5.25 billion 74.19 million.
The government has collected Rs 998.472 million in revenue from this. In the first 6 months of the previous fiscal year, 66,059 laptops worth Rs 4.52 billion 980 million were imported. In the last fiscal year, the revenue from laptops was Rs 868.96 million. In the current fiscal year, an average of Rs 1,100 or 1.6 percent more has been paid per laptop.
Router imports have also increased this year to 489,336 units. Its price is 1.25 billion 337 thousand rupees, while in the same period of the last fiscal year, 366 thousand 880 routers were imported for 946 million 82 thousand rupees.
The import price per router seems to be a bit cheaper this time compared to the last fiscal year. Up to Asoj of the current fiscal year, 188 thousand 821 routers had to be imported for 451 million 27 thousand rupees. In this way, the import price per router has increased by an average of 6-7 percent from Asoj to Poush.
There has been a more than three-fold increase in the import of SIM cards compared to the last fiscal year. Up to Poush of the current fiscal year, 32 lakh 82 thousand 593 SIM cards have been imported. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, 1 million 54 thousand 811 SIM cards were imported. According to the Customs Department, SIM cards have been imported into Nepal from countries including China, Australia, Mexico, Britain, Japan, Qatar, Denmark, and others.
46,157 smart watches worth Rs 118.214 crore have been imported in the last 6 months. In the same period of the previous fiscal year, 188.939 crore worth of smart watches were imported. Among mobile accessories, 19,290 selfie sticks worth Rs 79.707 crore have been imported, while 59.717 memory cards worth Rs 93.79 lakh have been imported.
In computer equipment, 353,582 mice have been imported in the first 6 months of the current fiscal year for Rs 51 crore. A total of Rs 81.111 crore has been paid for 24,046 keyboards.
