The 13th edition of the three-day culinary festival has begun at Bhedetar in Dhankuta, a famous tourist destination in the east, on the occasion of the English New Year 2026.
Inaugurating the food festival organized by the Hotel Association Bhedetar targeting Indian tourists on Wednesday, Koshi Province Tourism, Forest and Environment Minister Sadananda Mandal said that the provincial government is positive about developing tourism while preserving culture and the environment.
He said that this festival will increase the arrival of tourists from neighboring India and will bring a positive impetus to the local hotel, restaurant and transportation sector. ‘The ethnic costumes, lifestyle and traditional customs and culture here can be promoted,’ he said.
The organizers have stated that priority will be given to food dishes that reflect local and ethnic identity in the festival, which will run until Friday. The organizers claim that traditional food dishes of the Rai, Limbu, Magar, Gurung, Yamfu and Newari communities will be the main attractions of the festival.
In addition, those who reach Bhedetar for the festival can enjoy the exciting experience of mountain biking and paragliding, as in the past, said Hotel Association Bhedetar President Tumraj Limbu. He said that the festival will also help in promoting tourist destinations such as the Skywalk at Bhedetar Chals Point, Pathibhara Temple, Thakaldanda Picnic Spot, Namjeko Atmabasne Ghar and Janajati Park, Namaste Waterfall, Ajangko Barko Rukh, Karkichhap Waterfall and Khuwalung-Dhwaje Padmarg. The festival will also feature an exhibition of vegetables and fruits produced from organic farming, handicrafts, agricultural and home-made product stalls. It is expected that a turnover of Rs 25 million will be generated during the festival period and 50 to 60 thousand tourists will visit Bhedetar. Chairman Limbu informed that it has been decided to provide a 10 percent discount on food and accommodation for hotels and restaurants operating in Bhedetar during the festival period. There are 200 small and large hotel restaurants operating in Bhedetar. The hotel restaurants here have the capacity to serve 4 thousand visitors daily.
Meanwhile, journalists Narayan Kumar Aathpahariya of Dhankuta and Rohit Basnet of Dharan have been awarded for their contribution to the promotion of the Bhedetar area.
The chief guest of the program, Koshi Province's Minister for Tourism, Forest and Environment, Mandal, and President of Hotel Association Bhedetar, Limbu, honored both journalists with a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each.
