The remaining work on the under-construction bridge over the Kamala River on the border of Siraha and Dhanusha along the Postal Highway, which has not been completed even after 14 years since the contract agreement, is underway.
Construction work is underway by the construction contractor with a schedule to complete the construction of the Kamala Bridge by next Chaitra. The length of the Kamala Bridge, which has been contracted under the model of designing and constructing the bridge by the construction contractor, is 469 meters.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure, Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising had directed on November 20 to immediately proceed with the construction and rehabilitation work of the bridge after conducting on-site monitoring and to complete the construction as soon as possible.
Minister Ghising has warned that he will regularly monitor the construction and terminate the contract if the work is not satisfactory. He had directed that temporary arrangements for movement be made by placing a hume pipe at the current river location. Accordingly, the contract has been managed and the work of laying the pipe is also underway.
Even after almost 14 years since the contract agreement was signed, the Kamala Bridge has not been constructed. The citizens have suffered due to the lack of a bridge, vehicles are forced to use long routes to commute, and they are forced to make risky and difficult journeys to cross the Kamala River.
On 17 Ashad 2078, the flood in the Kamala River had damaged two foundations of the bridge, damaging four slabs. Of the damaged slabs, two slabs on the Siraha (east) side have been removed, while a technical study has shown that two slabs on the Dhanusha (west) side do not need to be removed.
Accordingly, the work of slab lifting will now begin by strengthening the collapsed foundation. The relevant expert technicians are visiting and inspecting the site and preparing an action plan for the lifting.
The substructure work on the east side of the bridge (Siraha) has been completed. Since one foundation collapsed after removing the two slabs on the Siraha side, two foundations were placed in that place, and the substructure including the foundation has been completed. Now, the plate girder remains to be placed. The The work of making plate girders is underway in Chitwan. Once the girders are ready, they will be taken to the bridge and installed.
The construction of the river control and access road under the contract has not yet begun. Since the river course has changed after the flood in the Kamala River last Asoj, discussions are underway on the design and construction will begin once the design is finalized.
A contract agreement was signed with Pappu-Lumbini JV in Jestha 2068 for the construction of the Kamala Bridge on the Postal Highway, which is the lifeline of the Terai/Madhesh. The construction of the bridge was to be completed in Mangsir 2071 as per the initial agreement.
The contract agreement, which was extended for the seventh time after the bridge could not be constructed on time, expired last Asajar. A proposal has been submitted by the construction contractor for an extension of the deadline until Asajar. The Roads Department has stated that the contract is currently in the process of extending the deadline. The work is being done by Lumbini Company.
