The construction of the under-construction tunnel at Dobhan, Tinau Rural Municipality-3, Palpa along the Siddhartha Highway has been completed by 65 percent. The financial progress of the project is 56 percent. The construction of the 1,126-meter-long tunnel has been completed.

Construction of three pipe tunnels with lengths of 151, 161 and 130 meters has also been completed. The access road leading to the tunnel route, cliff protection work, retaining walls and other structures are under construction. In total, 2398 meters of road will have to be upgraded.

A rock shed measuring 780 meters long, 3.43 meters wide and 4.4 meters high is yet to be constructed to prevent landslides and rockfalls and make the existing road safe. The construction of the rock shed will begin only after vehicles start plying through the main tunnel.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising inspected the tunnel route construction site on Sunday and urged for expediting the construction and completing the work within the stipulated time.

Minister Ghising, who reached the project site along with Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport Keshav Kumar Sharma, directed that the pending issues between the project and the construction entrepreneurs be resolved immediately. Ghising said that there should be no delay in the construction work due to not making the decision on time.

‘The construction contractor has demanded a 19-month extension, citing circumstances beyond his control such as not being able to provide the site on time, delay in deforestation, delay in advance payment, etc., the project, consultant and construction contractor should sit down and decide on this issue immediately. The construction of the project should not be affected under any circumstances without making a decision,’ he said.

A contract agreement was signed with China State Construction Engineering Corporation on 25 Falgun 2078 for the construction of the tunnel route under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model for 7.34 billion 21 million (including taxes). As per the agreement, the construction of the tunnel should be completed by Chaitra 2083. After that, the company will operate and maintain the tunnel for 1825 days. The construction of the tunnel route is being carried out from the Government of Nepal’s own resources.

In the Siddhababa area, there have been many accidents and human casualties due to rockfalls, mudslides, and dry landslides during the rainy season and winter. The problem becomes worse during the rainy season, causing traffic disruptions for hours.

A tunnel has been constructed in Siddhababa to solve this problem. After the tunnel is constructed, it is seen that passengers traveling via Siddhabhadra Highway will have safe and reliable travel facilities, time and distance will be reduced, accidents and vehicle costs will be reduced.
