The construction of the 40-megawatt Rahughat Hydropower Project, operated by Raghuganga Hydropower, a subsidiary of the Nepal Electricity Authority, has reached 90 percent physical progress.

The project, which has reached the final stage of construction of the physical structure of the tunnel, dam and power house, and installation of equipment, is engaged in the construction of the switchyard to connect electricity to the central grid. Raghuganga Hydropower Project Manager Raj Bista informed that the constructed structures are being completed with the aim of starting trial production in the next three months.

'Civil, hydro and electromechanical work is being carried out bit by bit,' he said, 'We have installed a 20 MW turbine and prepared it for dry testing. The contractor has been mobilized with the aim of starting trial production within March.'

Indian civil contractor company Jayaprakash Associates (JP) had signed a contract agreement for Rs 6 billion on November 17, 2017 (2074 Mangsir 6) with a target of completion in 45 months. The first deadline was extended in February 2022, the second in February 2022 and the third until November 2025. The fourth deadline has been extended until March.

The construction of the dam at the foot of Jhin in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-4, Dagnam and Ward No. 5, 6-kilometer 270-meter long main tunnel and power house in Tilkenichauar has been completed by more than 90 percent.

Harish Agrawal, Project Manager of contractor company JP, said that the construction of the project has been delayed due to natural disasters such as the Corona epidemic, floods, landslides and shortage of river-related construction materials.

The Rahughat Hydropower Project has been implemented in the company's concept and Engineering Procurement and Contract (EPC) format with a concessional loan of 67 million US dollars from the Export-Import Bank of India and a joint investment of the Nepal Electricity Authority and the Government of Nepal.

Due to the weak economic situation, the contract with the old contractor IVRCL was terminated in 2072 and the construction was carried out through a new process. The last selected civil contractor, Jayaprakash Associates (JP), started digging the access road in Ashar 2075 and the tunnel in Ashar 2076.

The project had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) in Chaitra 2075 with a target of generating Rs 245 million 93 thousand 34 units of electricity annually. The electricity generated from Rahughat will be connected to the central grid through the 220 kV (double circuit) Dana-Kushma transmission line under the Kaligandaki corridor through Lilo. Four towers and transmission lines have also been constructed.
