22 ailing irrigation contracts terminated

Twenty-two irrigation contracts have been terminated due to lack of progress in construction even after a long period of time since the contract was awarded. The total contract value of the terminated projects is Rs 14.23 billion.

22 sick contracts, including 6 of the Babai Irrigation Project, 15 under the Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project Janakpurdham Dhanusha, and 1 of the Sunkoshi Marine, have been terminated. A contract worth Rs 17.6 million of Bheri Babai has been terminated.

A contract worth Rs 131.7 million under the Janakpurdham office has been terminated.

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising had directed subordinate bodies to terminate sick contracts to end the trend of taking contracts but not working and leaving projects stranded.

After that, the offices had been moving forward with the process of terminating problematic contracts for years. There are 2 out of 15 ongoing contracts under the Water Resources and Irrigation Department. Out of which, 33 contracts are problematic. Of the problematic ones, 22 have been terminated so far, informed the department's Director General Mitra Baral.

The largest contract for irrigation, the Sunkoshi Marine Diversion Multipurpose Project, a national pride, has been terminated. The contract agreement with construction contractor Patel-Raman JV, Janakpur-9 Dhanusha, for the supply and installation of the project's dam (headworks), civil structures including power plants, and hydromechanical equipment including gates, has been terminated. A contract agreement of Rs 14.8 billion was signed with Patel-Raman JV for the construction of the project.
