The government has refunded over Rs 4 billion in taxes on export basis to diplomatic missions, diplomats and various diplomatic agencies in a single year. In the fiscal year 2081/082, these missions and agencies had claimed a tax refund of Rs 526.214 crore from the Department of Internal Revenue, of which Rs 455.884 crore has been refunded.

In the same fiscal year, other taxpayers and projects had claimed tax refunds of Rs 22,522,066,403, of which the government has refunded Rs 4,389,352,000.

According to the Department of Internal Revenue, diplomatic missions, diplomats and various agencies and offices had claimed a total of 1,433 tax refund claims in 2081/082. The department's annual report states that it decided to refund Rs 4,845,236,498 against a total refund claim of Rs 23,482,080.

The Tax Refund Section of the Department of Revenue has been given the responsibility of refunding value-added tax of diplomatic missions and diplomats, and monitoring and facilitating the work related to tax refunds of international organizations. The government had approved and implemented the procedure for electronic VAT refunds on 20 Kartik 20, 2080.
