What you should know

Due to unseasonal rains, paddy production has decreased this year in the district. Morang, which is considered the best in the country in terms of paddy production, has decreased by 2,084 metric tons of paddy production this year compared to last year.

Deepa Dev, head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center in Morang, said that the unseasonal rains in the second week of Kartik damaged the rice cultivation. She informed that the production has decreased as 339,03.45 metric tons of rice were produced in the district last year, while this year it has decreased to 336,919.41 metric tons.

Last year, the production of rice per hectare was 4.88 metric tons, but this year it has decreased to only 4.85 metric tons. This year, there is data that rice has been cultivated in an area of 69,467.92 hectares in the district.

'We estimate that the water could not drain due to the increasing erosion of the surrounding rivers and streams, and the production may have decreased due to more damage to the ripe rice,' said agricultural expert Rajendra Upreti. He said that although the rice production was good this year, the unseasonal rains had an impact on the storage time.

Birendra Khatri of Belbari-11 Bhangbari said that about 90 maunds of paddy planted on about 6 bighas of land has been damaged due to unseasonal rains. Farmers are worried that the price of paddy has also fallen along with the damage.

This year, the market price of paddy is between 1,200 and 1,300 rupees per maund. Last year, in Mangsir, the transaction was between 1,700 and 1,800 rupees per maund, Khatri said.
