In the remote district of Mugu in Karnali Province, a group led by local youth Ashish Devkota has presented a symbolic 'fountain' to Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising, drawing the government's attention to the serious situation where 95 percent of the citizens still do not have permanent electricity facilities.

According to the youth, the number of people who can get electricity in the district with a population of about 70,000 is limited to only about 3,500, due to which most of the citizens are forced to live on firewood, candles and temporary lighting even in today's technological age. In the letter submitted to the minister, they clearly stated that the electrification of Mugu is not just a matter of infrastructure development but also an issue related to social justice, human development and national inclusion.

The youth said that the main challenges are that the vast area of Mugu is still not connected to the national grid, the supply is unstable and the distribution structure is weak. They complain that the lack of electricity in all sectors such as schools and hospitals, communication, digital services, local industries, and agricultural processing has paralyzed daily life.

The letter urges the government to declare Mugu district a special electrification priority area, make public a clear deadline for 100 percent electricity access, immediately mobilize an expert team to build a sustainable and reliable distribution structure, and move forward with a long-term solution by integrating local alternative energy sources with the national grid.

Regarding the ‘Jharo’ gift, the youth said, ‘It is time for the Minister to take seriously the message that Mugu is still in darkness in Nepal in the 22nd century.’ They expressed the hope that the positive changes seen across the country under the leadership of Minister Ghising in the energy sector will soon reach Mugu, and requested the government to take firm steps to bring the light that has been awaited for decades to every home without delay. In response, Minister Ghising has expressed a commitment to the youth to keep Mugu lighted within a year.
