There used to be complaints against the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection that it only monitored the market during festivals and remained silent at other times. However, the department has recently intensified its market monitoring.

The department had inspected eight different industries and firms in Kathmandu on Friday alone. In the process, a fine of Rs 205,000 has been imposed on Crystal Store Tarakeswar Goldhunga.

The department took action under Section 16 and Section 38 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 BS, for the offenses under Section 39(1) of the same act. It states that the actual quality, quantity, price measurement, format or sale or provision of goods and services is considered to be unfair commercial and business activities.

Section 39 of the Act states that ‘If, from the evidence immediately obtained during market inspection, inspection, investigation or search, it is found that the manufacturer, transporter, accumulator, importer, seller or service provider of goods has committed any of the following offenses, the inspection officer may fine him. According to the act, if unfair commercial activities are found, the inspection officer can impose a maximum fine of Rs 200,000 to Rs 300,000.

A mobile kitchen located in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu Metropolitan City 31 has been fined Rs 20,000. Green Buds Bakery Cafe in Sinamangal has been fined Rs 5,000. A canteen located in the Sumeru Hospital premises in Lalitpur has been directed to appear before the department within three days with business-related documents. The other three firms have been given general instructions.
