Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising has urged the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to assist in a feasibility study for operating electric trolley buses on the Kathmandu Valley ring road and the expanding main highways.

While taking information about the sustainable urban electrification project with the team led by ADB Nepal Resident Mission Chief Arnaud Kushwa on Wednesday, Minister Ghising requested for necessary assistance in operating the trolley bus system.

During the meeting, Minister Ghising said, "The Kathmandu Ring Road, Kathmandu-Dhulikhel, Pokhara-Mugling, Butwal-Narayanghat, Butwal-Bhairahawa, Biratnagar-Dharan and other roads are being expanded. One lane of these roads can be used for trolley buses. Electric vehicles like trolleys should also be used to increase the internal consumption of the electricity generated. Please provide necessary assistance for the feasibility study of trolley operation."

The trolley bus, which came into operation from Tripureshwor in Kathmandu to Suryabinayak in Bhaktapur in 2033 BS with the support of the Chinese government, was completely closed in 2066 BS.

With the support of ADB, a sustainable urban electric project is being implemented in Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara Metropolitan City and Lumbini-Butwal-Siddharthnagar Corridor, emphasizing the use of electric vehicles for public transport improvement.

The project will introduce 250 electric vehicles for public transport. Charging stations, maintenance and operation infrastructure for electric vehicles, bicycle land and non-motorized facilities to reach the bus stop will be constructed.

The concept paper of the project has been approved. The feasibility study of the project is currently underway. The project will be implemented through the concerned local levels by mobilizing through the Urban Development Fund and the Infrastructure Development Bank. It has been proposed to establish a Public Transport Authority in Gandaki Province for the implementation of the project in Pokhara Metropolitan City.

The estimated cost of the project is 160 million US dollars (about 22.56 billion rupees). Of this, 100 million rupees is a concessional loan from ADB and 40 million is a zero-interest loan. The remaining amount will have to be borne by the government.
