Cauliflower kept for sale at the market in Kawasoti, eastern Nawalparasi, has been found to contain high levels of pesticides. The Pesticide Detection Rapid Analysis Laboratory Unit, Kawasoti, collected samples from the market on Monday and tested them, and the cauliflower was destroyed after it was found to contain pesticides that could affect human health.
A farmer from Rajahar had put cauliflower for sale at the market. The Pesticide Detection Rapid Analysis Laboratory Unit has been testing vegetable samples from time to time. In the meantime, 98.85 percent of the pesticide was found in the cauliflower, said Birendra Bhandari, Deputy Technical Assistant of the Laboratory Unit, Kawasoti. During the testing of cauliflower brought for sale from various places, about 150 kg of cauliflower was destroyed because it was found to have excessive pesticide content.
Although it is considered suitable for consumption if the organophosphate content is less than 35 percent, excessive pesticide was found. Although the local level and the laboratory unit requested that the vegetables be sent to the market only after testing for pesticide free of cost, the farmers have not implemented it.
Earlier, 99 percent of the pesticide was found in the vegetables brought from Chitwan at the market in Kawasoti.
