Five-star hotel Taragaun Regency Hotels (Hyatt Regency, Kathmandu) has stated that it will reopen as soon as possible after reconstruction, citing extensive damage sustained during the protests on Bhadra 24.
On Sunday, the hotel's executive director Suresh Lal Shrestha issued a statement saying that the damage to the hotel during the protest on Bhadra 24 is being assessed and that it will be operational after reconstruction. The hotel says that it will take at least a year for the upgrade and reconstruction.
'The vandalism, looting and arson activities during the protest have caused major damage to the overall structure of the hotel, including guest rooms, offices, reception, lobby, restaurant, banquet hall, chaitya, and since then the hotel has been completely closed,' the statement said. 'We are committed to upgrading and reconstructing the hotel after a complete assessment of the damage and bringing it back into operation as soon as possible with more extensive and excellent services.'
In the statement, the hotel expressed gratitude for the assurances given by Prime Minister Sushila Karki and Finance Minister Rameshwor Prasad Khanal regarding the damage to the hotel that the government will provide necessary support.
The hotel has also expressed its commitment to further contribute to the country's economic development by increasing the government's revenue sources in the coming days and to operate with a firm determination to further enhance Nepal's prestige in the tourism sector by carrying the responsibility of Nepal's flagship hotel.
'The hotel has been witnessing various political and social changes in Nepal in the last two and a half decades. During this period, we have faced challenging situations such as extreme armed conflict, peace process, constitution-making, earthquakes and the Corona pandemic, providing employment to thousands of people for years, and making a significant contribution to the country's tourism and economy,' the hotel said.
The hotel has been honored by the government several times for its significant contribution to the country's economy through tourism. The hotel has so far been honored as the highest income tax payer in the tourism sector seven times and as the hotel that collects the most foreign exchange in the tourism sector twice.
