Sagarmatha Gas Industry in Banepa Municipality-4 Thapagaon of Kavre has destroyed 3000 unsafe and old cylinders on Sunday. The industry destroys cylinders that are unsafe and have leaks, broken footing necking, expired cylinders and failed hydraulic tests. The company informed that cylinders were destroyed in Rohwar along with Oil Corporation, Quality and Weights and Measures Department, local public representatives, consumer rights workers.

'Last year's floods damaged some cylinders. There was also an instruction from the Oil Corporation to destroy the damaged cylinders,' said Savarmal Agarwal, the owner of the industry, 'We have destroyed the old cylinders to provide good and good gas cylinders in the market.' This industry has been selling Sagar brand cylinders. The cylinder destroyed on Sunday is from last August till now.

'In the past we used to collect and destroy them. On an average, 3 to 500 cylinders were destroyed. This time the flood caused more problems. We have collected more than 3,000 cylinders in one year, the process of collection is still going on," he said. "All the cylinders collected are tested. We will destroy cylinders that do not meet the standards.'

The industry has been filling 7,500 cylinders daily and said that it has 4.5 lakh cylinders in the market. Owner Agarwal said that those cylinders in the market will be tested during refilling. Officials of Oil Corporation Sanjeev Sangroula and Anjoy Manandhar of Quality and Weights Department participating in the monitoring opined that destroying expired and damaged cylinders is positive. They said that consumers should also be made safe by sending safe cylinders to the market.

Currently there are more than 60 gas industries in the country. Failure to conduct timely hydraulic/hydrostatic test of cylinders increases the risk. Hydraulic/Hydrostatic testing is done with air and water pressure. The refilled cylinder is immersed in water.

It is also known as deep test. Blisters appear in case of leakage during dip test. Madhav Timilsina, President of the Consumer Rights Research Forum participating in the program, said that destroying unsafe and old cylinders would be in favor of consumers. He said that every gas industry should fulfill its obligations and destroy old and expired cylinders on time.
