Deputy Governor Neelam Dhungana has said that it is not possible to distribute the new bank license now. In an event held in Kathmandu on Sunday, Dhungana said that although there is talk about establishing a new bank, there is no position to distribute licenses at the moment.
According to Dhungana, it is not long now that it is said that there is unhealthy competition in banks. The National Bank also conducted a study on how many banks are suitable. Dhungana said that it is not possible to determine the number of banks by doing a study 2 years ago, but now it is not possible to combine them and give new licenses.
According to Dhungana, Nepal Rastra Bank is continuously trying to maintain stability in the banking sector through monetary policy regulation and other necessary provisions. She said that Nepal Rastra Bank is closely monitoring the current situation and scenario of banks and financial institutions.
Deputy Governor Dhungana said, "Two years ago, the National Bank issued a report that there should be around 15-18 banks. Not now. There is no such thing as bringing in something new by saying that we have to open it again. We cannot rush into anything without studying, without any foundation. In the context of digital bank, if there is a need of a separate nature, the institutions should be disclosed after studying. It has also come in the budget. We are positive about it. You have to take a decision only by looking at everything.'
