Communications and Information Technology Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung has instructed Nepal Telecom and Nepal Telecommunication Authority to operate the 5G network as soon as possible.
In the discussion on NTC and NTA's 2082/83 annual budget and program held at the Ministry on Tuesday, Minister Gurung directed to start the 5G network immediately while making the expansion of 4G wide. Minister Gurung, who is also the spokesperson of the government, said that after he became the minister, he had repeatedly asked to start the 5G network, and said that it was a sad matter that even after one year of his directives, it has not been implemented. He said that now the network should be expanded as soon as possible. During the
discussion, Minister Gurung made it clear that it is not enough for Nepal Telecom to theoretically reach the whole district. He said that delivery of 4G network to every people's homes should be given priority. In addition, Minister Gurung urged not to slow down in the expansion of telecommunications as there will be problems in the internet and telephone, it will be difficult for the government's digital framework objectives to be meaningful, people will be deprived of feeling the sense of service and there will be a challenge to maintain digital governance.
Similarly, he drew the attention of NTA and NTC to reduce network inconvenience on the highway. Minister Gurung also stressed on being careful in service expansion where the people are in dire need of a network.
Mentioning that Internet and telephone facilities are very important to promote tourism, Minister Gurung urged to make network expansion effective in tourist destinations. 'NTC should reach where the people need it most', he said, 'this year 5-G should be launched soon.' He pointed out that Nepal Telecom's promotional activities are very low and requested to inform people about NTC by promoting in areas like education and health. In the
discussion, Communication Secretary Radhika Aryal requested that NTA should make the monitoring part effective. She also instructed to make action plans to encourage the young generation who are doing innovative work in the field of information technology.
NTEA President Bhupendra Bhandari informed that the operation of 5G network has almost reached its final stage. He said that the network will be expanded by starting the bidding process in a short time. Acting Managing Director of NTC Savina Maske (Pradhan) also said that 4-G expansion is ongoing and preparations are being made to launch 5-G.
