Fixed broadband service in Nepal has seen a significant increase in user attraction. According to the MIS report published by the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, the number of people using Fiber to the Home (FTTH) internet service has reached 3178,637 by the end of May.

This is 75 thousand 814 more than the previous month.

In Baisakh, the number of FTTH Internet customers was 31 lakh 2 thousand 823. This number has increased by about 2.44 percent in May. According to a report published last month by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) under the United Nations, mobile broadband services have become three times more accessible (affordable) compared to fixed broadband services globally since 2018. In Nepal, fixed broadband is better than mobile. However, until now, only half of the population has reached this service.

Mobile broadband is an Internet service provided through mobile networks such as 3G, 4G, Fizzy using a smartphone, tablet or Wi-Fi device. This requires a SIM card or mobile data pack. Fixed broadband is internet service connected to homes or offices through optical fiber, ADCL or cable.

In this the router distributes the internet to different devices. The number of fixed broadband internet service users through ADSL/Cable in Nepal is continuously decreasing. In the last two months, 25 percent of customers have abandoned such services. This old technology has been replaced by the service provider, Nepal Telecom itself.

Worldlink Communications is the leader in modern fiber Internet service by the largest number of subscribers. In May, the number of customers using fiber services of Worldlink was 1 million 7 thousand 434.

followed by Dees Media Network, Nepal Telecom, Vianet and Subisu respectively. In the last two months, Vianet has grown the most subscribers. About 70,000 new customers have been added within a month. Vianet's customers were 244,945  in Baisakh and reached 315,770 in May.

According to the authority, the penetration (access) rate of fiber internet service has increased gradually and reached 47.63 percent in May. It was 46.49 percent in Baisakh. It can be understood that almost half of the country's population has access to fiber internet directly or indirectly. Competition among service providers and changing user trends can be expected to accelerate this growth. Users seem to be moving away from older technologies like ADSL, fixed wireless or 3G towards 4G and fiber.

More than 100,000 new users have been connected to 4G Mobile Internet within the last one month. In Baisakh, the total number of 4G users across the country was 25.3 million 75 thousand 423 and in May it has reached 2 million 54 million 82 thousand 647. In 3G, customers are continuously decreasing. This technology is on its way to being phased out. Ncell has already announced that it will shut down 3G by the end of 2025. Nepal Telecom has also made internal preparations for 3G displacement.
