The indigenously invested Upper Tamakosi Hydropower Station has started producing electricity at full capacity 24 hours a day. 24-hour electricity generation has started with the completion of partial repair of both ponds damaged by landslides.
On October 11, last year, due to a landslide that fell from above the place where the 456 megawatt capacity hydroelectric power plant's sand settling ponds, i.e., the power operation control room with desander, the underground canal (culvert) were located. Because of this, electricity production was stopped for 3 months last year.
Last December, the center was generating electricity based on the river after repairing the desander on the left side of the two ponds that were causing sand. Purnagopal Ranjith, manager of the center, said that after the partial repair of the descender on the right side, the dam site was filled with water and the hydroelectric power station was put into operation at full capacity from Thursday afternoon.
'We have brought the Tamakosi hydroelectric power plant into operation at full capacity,' he said, the reconstruction has not been completed to bring it back to its original state, but we have brought both desanders partially into operation to reduce the loss of the center for 3 months of this drought. "Waiting for a month and a half to bring it fully into operation will increase the burden of losses for the Tamakosi Company, so the current production is partially prepared and produced at full capacity," he said. The design discharge (flow of water) of Tamakosi hydropower station is 66 cusec. Due to the incessant rains last October, the flow of the Tamakosi River reached 461 cusecs at the dam. According to the power purchase agreement (PPA) made by Tamakosi with the authority, the power plant has to be shut down as soon as the water flow reaches 250 cusecs.
The underground canal damaged by a similar landslide has been repaired. Electricity control room is being constructed. When the landslide completely damaged the building of the electricity control room, two employees and two Nepalese soldiers working there were killed. Upper Tamakosi had claimed insurance of one billion 80 million rupees for civil, electro mechanical and other equipment (electric and hydro equipment) damaged by the landslide. Tamakosi has the capacity to produce electricity worth Rs 4 crore per day. Tamakosi has been helping the Nepal Electricity Authority to manage the load by producing electricity according to the demand during winter. In winter, the authority has been running Tamakosi as a backup to manage the load. Semi Reservoir Project (PROR) has been designed to provide full capacity in upper Tamakosi rains and 4 hours peaking (fully operational) in winters.
Upper Tamakosi Hydro Power Company Limited is building a new project to divert water from the Rolwaling river to reach the full capacity of the hydropower plant for 6 hours during winter. An additional 22 megawatts of electricity will be generated from the project. After generating electricity, water from the same project will be pumped to the dam site of the Tamakosi hydropower plant.
