The scope of taxes is expanding day by day. According to the Ministry of Finance, 433,000 taxpayers have been added up to January of the current financial year. In the fiscal year 2080/81, a total of 4,26,330 permanent account number taxpayers have been added, while in the same period of the current fiscal year, a total of 433,733 taxpayers have been added.

According to the ministry, the number of taxpayers with permanent account numbers has reached 66,59,836. In the total permanent account number registered during this period, the ratio of commercial permanent account number, permanent account number taken by the tax collection agency and personal permanent account number is 30.2 percent, 0.5 percent and 69.3 percent respectively. Until the review period, the number of taxpayers registered for value added tax has reached 341 thousand 716 and the number of taxpayers registered for excise duty has reached 123 thousand 132.

On May 15, the then finance minister Varshman Pun formulated the 2081/82 budget. In the revenue policy and program, he announced that by improving the revenue system, expansion of economic activities in the country, promotion of investment and giving priority and support to domestic production and enterprise, expansion of the scope of revenue and protection of the tax base, development of a sustainable, transparent and fair revenue system, expansion of the scope of tax and enhancement of tax compliance through taxpayer education and awareness programs.

Although the number of tax payers has increased significantly after the budget, the income of the government has not increased in an encouraging manner. The data of the Comptroller General's Office shows that the government has set a target of collecting revenue of 14 trillion 19 billion in the current financial year, but only 51 percent of the target, i.e. 7 trillion 37 billion, has been collected by Chaitra 8. Statistics show that the budget deficit of the government has exceeded 1 billion by this time.
