In this week's share trading, the attraction of investors in the shares of hydropower companies has been seen a lot. This is confirmed by the fact that the share of hydropower sub-group in the total share turnover of the week is about 30 percent. As Thursday was a public holiday, the stock market was open only four days this week.
Shares worth about 34 billion rupees were traded during this period. Out of that, shares worth 10 billion 1587 million rupees were traded in the hydropower company.
This is 30.11 percent of the total turnover. The share of banks and financial institutions and insurance in the weekly total turnover comes to 38 and a half percent. But in Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE), the shares of companies in these sectors are listed in separate subgroups such as banking, development banks, finance companies, microfinance, life insurance and non-life insurance.
Adding the turnover of all these subgroups to the total turnover of the week comes to 38.35 percent. This is only about 8 and a half percentage points higher than the share of hydropower. Experts say that in the last year, the dominance of the financial and insurance sector in the stock market is decreasing and the hydropower sector is increasing.
This week three days (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) NEPSE decreased, one day (Wednesday) increased. NEPSE, which fell by 99.22 points in three days, increased by 17.28 points on Wednesday. NEPSE, which closed last Thursday at 2,818.43 points, went down to 2,736.48 points on Wednesday. During this period, along with the NEPSE index, the transaction amount, the number of shares bought and sold, etc. have all decreased. In the weekly trade, most of the subgroup indices are negative. This means that the wealth of the investor has decreased.
In this week's total share trading, investment sub-group's share is 10.24 percent while others are 16.66 percent. Manufacturing and processing group companies account for 3.54 percent, while hotels and tourism have only 0.90 percent.
Currently, the number of companies listed in the Nepal Stock Exchange has reached 268. Among the listed companies, there are 130 banks and financial institutions and insurance companies, while 91 belong to hydropower companies, 22 manufacturing and processing companies, 7 hotels, 7 investment companies, 4 trading organizations and 7 other groups. As of February 2080, the number of listed companies was 271.
In terms of share market size (total market capitalization), financial institutions account for 53.3 percent of this market, while hydroelectricity's share is 16.7 percent. Total market capitalization is calculated by multiplying the number of shares listed in the stock market by the share price on the same day. The continuous decrease in the share of financial institutions and insurance in the total market capitalization and the increase of hydropower also confirm that the dominance of hydropower in the market is increasing.
As of January 2079, the share of the financial and insurance sector in the total market capitalization was 65.8 percent and that of hydropower was only 12.9 percent. In January 2080, the share of financial and insurance sector was 57.3 percent and hydropower was only 15.9 percent.
