Planting of Chaite paddy has started in Bardia

Chaite paddy planting has started in Rajapur Municipality and Geruwa Rural Municipality of Bardia this year. Chaite paddy is planted from the last week of February and harvesting starts from the last week of May.

In the district last year, an area of 1,175 hectares was planted with Chaite paddy. This year, the area of paddy planting has decreased to 750 hectares, according to the Prime Minister's Agriculture Modernization Project Branch, Gulria.

Haldinath 1 and Haldinath hybrid chaite paddy farmers have started planting. Birendra Lamsal, head of Prime Minister's Agriculture Modernization Project Branch, Gularia, said that 3,783 tons of rice was produced last year.

"Starting from the last week of May, chait paddy is brought in by June," he said, "Half of the chait paddy is consumed by the farmers and the rest is bought by local businessmen. This rice is especially used for chiura.

Siva Tharu, a farmer of Rajapur Napa-5, said that since the last four years, she has left the maize crop and started planting chaite paddy. "Until three years ago, we used to irrigate with ocher water," she said. Local farmers say that the sugar factory established here has affected the rice superzone farmers. Banwari Lal Chowdhury, a farmer of Rajapur-5, says that the sugar mill has reduced the paddy field and if there is irrigation facility, chaite paddy can be produced in sufficient quantity.

For the first time in Bardia, the production of chait paddy was started in Rajapur and Geruwa in 073. Planting of annual rice starts after the introduction of chayote rice. In Rajapur and Geruwa, 16,000 hectares of rice is cultivated annually. Rice is cultivated annually in an area of more than 50,000 hectares throughout the district.
