The import of unassembled (unmanufactured) motorcycles through Birgunj port has increased rapidly.
Compared to the first seven months of the previous year, the import of such motorcycles has increased by three times in the seven months of the current year. Importer of motorcycle parts The process of manufacturing and selling motorcycles in Nepal has increased by importing them separately. This means that the import of ready-made motorcycles is decreasing as in previous years.
According to the data of Birganj Customs Office, 19 thousand 945 unassembled motorcycles worth 2.5 billion rupees have been imported through this border in the 7 months from July to March of the current year. From which 1 billion 86 crores of revenue has been collected .
During the same period last year, 7,638 unassembled motorcycles worth 76 crore rupees were imported through this channel. From which 67 crore revenue was collected.
Birganj Customs Office Information Officer Amit Tiwari said that Jagdamba Group imports Pulsar and TVA brand motorcycles which are the most sold in Nepal. He said that since the assembled plants of both the motorcycles have been established in Nepal, the importers are bringing parts and assembling them in Nepal rather than importing ready-made motorcycles.
Tiwari says that the import of unassembled motorcycles has increased because the excise duty is lower than that of ready-made motorcycles. "Generally, import of ready-made motorcycles incurs 30 percent excise duty," he said, "but import of unassembled motorcycles incurs only 15 percent excise duty."
Other charges ie value added tax 13 and customs duty 30 percent. In this way, since the excise duty is only halved, the motorcycle manufacturing companies will save a lot, so they have started to prepare motorcycles by installing assembling plants in Nepal.
