Government-owned Nepal Telecom has announced to stop the 2G service operating in the 1800 MHz band. The company has informed that it plans to close the 2G service within this financial year.

Sangeeta Pahari, managing director of the company, informed about the closure of 2G service at the event organized on the occasion of Telecom's 21st anniversary on Tuesday. With the aim of technology transformation and providing quality services, Telecom is going to replace 2G service by giving priority to the expansion of 4G.

So far, Nepal Telecom's 4G service has reached 744 local levels in 77 districts of the country. The company has further expanded the reach of wireless broadband services and has prepared the infrastructure for the construction of 333 new E Node B (base stations) in the future. It has also been mentioned that the tender for the purchase of necessary equipment for the establishment of additional 1200 such infrastructures has reached the final stage.

Managing Director Pahadi said that the study with the appropriate business strategy for the operation of 5G service has been completed and the work of submitting the report is in the final stage. "In the future, the company plans to introduce 5G technology according to the instructions of the government," she said.

So far, the number of users of Nepal Telecom's internet and data services has reached more than 21 million. The company has informed. Out of this, there are 27 million GSM mobile data users and 16.4 million customers using 4G services, the company said. There are 3 lakh users of Nepal Telecom's FTTH data service.
