The Nepal Electricity Authority has started supplying electricity to the tourist city of Pokhara through an underground distribution system. As part of the Pokhara-Bharatpur Distribution System Strengthening Project, electricity distribution system (wire) underground, strengthening and automating work has been completed to the customers of the area through the same system.
In the first phase, the distribution line from Kundahar 132/11 KV substation in Pokhara to the West via Amarsingh Chowk, Buddhachowk and Seti Nadi Bridge section has been underground and electricity has been supplied to about 300 customers in that area.
In coordination with the Mugling-Pokhara road extension project, the transmission and distribution system has been underground and the overhead lines and poles have been removed. Initially, the distribution system up to Kundahar substation was planned to be underground, but later it was extended to the main entrance of the airport so that the passengers would not have to see the city made ugly by tangled wires as they exit Pokhara International Airport.
The Executive Director of the Authority, Kulman Ghising, directed to gradually provide electricity to the completed areas and remove the overhead structure after monitoring the work of making the distribution system underground. Executive Director Ghising monitored the work being done in Pokhara's main tourist area, lakeside, airport and other areas. Ghising instructed the Gandaki regional office chief and the project to immediately complete the rest of the lakeside work in coordination with the Metropolitan Municipality, road office and other agencies and supply electricity through the underground system.
The 11 KV and 400 volt lines in the main cities and roads of Pokhara under the Pokhara distribution center are being undergrounded and optical fiber is being laid in those areas. Project head Anand Subedi said that the overall construction progress of the Pokhara region is 54 percent so far. He said that since the work has been completed in the Max Street area at Lakeside, electricity will be supplied there soon through the underground system.
