Tribhuvan International Airport, which has been closed since 10 pm due to infrastructure expansion, will be closed after 11 pm from Saturday (January 19) and will open at 7 am.
Since the runway itself had to be closed for the construction of international apron, parallel taxi, hangar, etc., the flights were stopped at Kathmandu Airport from 23rd Kartik 10:00 pm.
Earlier, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal had issued a notice to halt flights from 10:00 pm to 8:00 am till March 18 and was working on three different projects inside the airport.
According to Engineer Dipendra Shrestha, Director of the Air Transport Capacity Enhancement Project in Sinamangal, the construction of complex works connected with the runway has been completed by stopping flights for 10 hours a day, and the infrastructure expansion time has been reduced from 10 hours to 8 hours. After 2026, with the aim of serving nearly 10 million passengers annually, Tribhuvan International Airport has been working on infrastructure expansion by stopping flights for 10 hours from 10 pm to 8 am and then non-stop during the day. At the
airport, an international apron and a taxiway connecting the apron with the runway to the north are being constructed with a joint investment of 7 billion by the Government of Nepal and the Civil Aviation Authority. This work has started from August 20, 2020. It will end in February 2026. This work is being done by the Chinese contractor Avic International.
The second contract within the airport is the infrastructure construction for the hangar. In the eastern part of the airport, a hangar area is being constructed for the Nepali Army, Nepal Air Service Corporation, Yeti Airlines, Shree Airlines, etc. at a cost of about 4 billion rupees.
This work has started since November 2022. It will be completed in October 2026. Asian Development Bank has 78 percent loan investment in it, while the remaining 22 percent amount belongs to Nepal Civil Aviation Authority. Chinese companies AVIC/KDN/CCECC JV are involved in this project.
The third project within the airport is the construction of a taxi-way parallel to the runway. This project, which started from December 2022, will be completed in October 2026. This project with an investment of around 4 billion is being built by the Chinese company Gansu.
