Tenth Committee to Reform Corporations

The International Relations and Tourism Committee of the Parliament has formed a sub-committee under the coordination of National Independent Party MP Shishir Khanal to study the problems encountered in the Nepal Airlines Corporation. This is the 10th committee formed on the reform of the corporation.

After discussion on Nepal Airlines Corporation on Tuesday and Thursday, the committee formed the Nepal Airlines Corporation Study Subcommittee. Congress MP Yogesh Gauchan Thakali, UML MP Sunita Baral and Maoist Center Chhiring Lhamu Lama (Tamang) are members of the committee.

The sub-committee has been asked to study the airline companies of other neighboring countries apart from the overseas stations of the corporation and suggest the reform of the corporation. The sub-committee has to submit the study report to the committee within one month. This is the 10th committee formed to reform the corporation, said Sudan Kirati, a member of the committee, MP from the Maoist Center.

The ninth study task force was formed when I was the tourism minister. Another committee was also formed to implement the topics suggested by the said committee', Kirati said, 'rather than forming a committee on the study committee, it will be in the interest of the corporation to implement the studies.'

Earlier, a 5-member study committee was formed under the coordination of former governor Dipendra Bahadur Chhetri in Chait 2079 for the structural reform of the corporation. Despite the huge potential of the air market, the corporation is running on 52 billion in debt.

The corporation has been losing its presence in the domestic and international markets due to managerial instability, lack of ships, complicated financial procurement process, expensive credit rates, political interference, and a large number of employees who do not have knowledge about the latest technology.

In 2052, Kalyandev Bhattarai issued a white paper for the first time about the corporation. Since then, every government has been forming small and large study committees to study the corporation.
