From January 1, 2081, new accounts can be opened in banks and financial institutions on the basis of national identity cards. The National Bank has given this instruction through a circular on Thursday.

"Banks and financial institutions will have to determine the details of the national identity card or the number of the national identity card based on the access to the details in the electronic record of the national identity card from January 1, 2081, and make arrangements to open the account on the basis of the national identity card or the number of the national identity card," said the instructions of the National Bank.

When the government of Nepal has to make government payments including social security, banks and financial institutions will have to open an account based on the details provided by the relevant government agencies. Before withdrawing money from such account, there is also an instruction to identify and confirm the customer in accordance with this instruction .
