The 'break through' of Palpa's Siddhababa Tunnel under the Siddharth Highway is going to be done on January 2. Although the digging work will be completed inside Pus, a few meters are left and they are going to break through in January.
Three 'cross passages' will be constructed in the middle of the tunnel as emergency doors. If there is some problem inside the tunnel, it will be possible to get out through the cross passage. All the three cross passages have been 'break through'. The total distance of the three cross passages is 441 meters. The length of the main tunnel is 1,126 meters.
Prabhat Kumar Jha, director of the Quality Research and Development Center under the Road Department, said that only 48 meters remain to be dug. If there is no problem, the break through will be done at the appointed time. Earlier, we were planning to 'break through' by the end of the year," he said.
It is constructed to be able to pass through a tunnel near Siddhababa Mandir and exit towards Palpa near Tinau hydropower. The construction of the tunnel was started as an alternative after frequent landslides on this road section and accidents started to increase. Four km of this section falls within the landslide prone area. The contract for the tunnel was signed in February 2078 so that it can be built within five years.
The contract was taken by China State Construction Engineering Company for 7 billion 34 million 21 million rupees. Its period is till 083 February. As compensation for the delay caused by tree felling, the builders have demanded an extension of 9 months. No decision has been made on this.
