This year, about Rs 41 crore worth of ginger has been exported from Salyan. According to the Agricultural Development Office, 8 thousand 9 metric tons of ginger have been exported. Last year, the export of 8,431 metric tons earned about 42 crores.
Sharada Municipality-14 and 15 Dharkhani of Malneta is famous for growing ginger. Farmers from other municipalities of the district have also made ginger a source of income.
Gyan Bahadur Gharti of Malneta Dharkhani has been producing 80 quintals of ginger every year in 10 plants. He said that he has earned more than 8 lakhs by selling ginger this year. Buddhiram Giri of Malneta earned 5 lakhs by selling 65 quintals of ginger and burno ginger grown in five plantations.
Farmers here have been cultivating ginger on 1,420 hectares. Locals forced to wander to different parts of India for work have now started enjoying farming. Despite the reduction in ginger production, farmers are happy after getting Rs 10 per kg more than last year. Gharti said that this year fresh ginger was sold at 50 rupees, burnt ginger at 80 rupees and seed ginger at 130 rupees per kilogram.
According to him, nearly two million worth of fresh, dry and seed ginger has been exported from Malneta alone. He informed that more than 500 farmers of Malneta are self-sufficient in ginger. The ginger here reaches not only Surkhet, Nepalgunj, Dang, Kathmandu but also various cities in India.
Iswari Narayan Gharti, information officer of the Agricultural Development Office, informed that the production of 22,000 metric tons last year has increased to 21,000 metric tons this year. He said that 5/6 metric tons of seeds were kept and 4/5 metric tons were sold in the local market. According to him, most of the ginger produced in the district has been exported to India. He said that the most ginger is produced in Sharda Municipality, Bagchaur Municipality and Siddhakumakh Rural Municipality of Salyan.
