America's major telecom companies AT&T, Verizon and Lumen Technologies have informed that there has been a cyber attack attempt on their systems.
The company stated that 'Salt Typhoon', which is considered to be a Chinese cyber espionage group, attempted to attack various individuals and organizations using their services. Despite the cyber attack, it is claimed that all the company's infrastructure is safe.
This is the seventh time in the last one year that attempts have been made to target major US telecommunications service providers and various individuals and groups affiliated with them. In other cases, hackers tried to gain access to those networks by adopting different styles and methods. The Wall Street Journal reported that Salt Typhoon also attacked some Internet service providers last month in an attempt to obtain sensitive information. It is estimated that the hackers have gained access to the system of 'wiretapping' or 'call interception' which is done with the permission of the court and which is provided by the internet service providers to the government agencies.
Threats such as Volt Typhoon, Flax Typhoon, which are considered to be related to China, have been linked to these events according to the research of Black Lotus Labs of Lumen Technologies. Apart from these recent incidents, cyber attackers harassed various major governments and their officials in 2024. A Chinese hacker group also attempted a cyber attack on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's team around his long-awaited visit to China. The campaign of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, both contestants in the US presidential election, were also targeted by cyber attackers.
With the discussion that Iranian hackers had access to some of Trump's campaign communication technologies, cyber attackers also attacked billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Tim Cook. Along with this, the US government is taking aggressive steps against cyber crime. The Biden administration has launched a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy to strengthen national security.
