Regarding the study of Kathmandu-Kerung railway, the government agencies of the two countries have discussed in China. In the discussion, in the presence of high-level employees of the two countries affiliated with various ministries, the problems and solutions were sought during the pre-feasibility study of the railway.
A team led by Keshav Kumar Sharma, secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, reached Shanghai, China, in a working meeting on China-Nepal rail cooperation. Bhimarjun Adhikari, Joint Secretary of Development Assistance Coordination and Quality Branch of the Ministry of Materials, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Forests and Environment, Law, Foreign Affairs, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs and Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Finance participated in the team along with Sharma. In the
meeting on Friday, the Chinese team pointed out that the construction of the Kathmandu-Kerung railway is challenging. Technicians from China Railway First Survey and Design Institute, a Chinese state-owned company involved in the study, also participated in the meeting. Bhimarjun Adhikari, joint secretary of development assistance coordination and quality branch of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, said that 98 percent of the matter is hilly and the construction cost is expensive.
The official said that the technical team informed the meeting about the study done so far. "This meeting is held every year in Nepal and sometimes in China, this time it was held in China," he said. He said that he suggested the technical team to use his experience on how to make it easy and convenient.
As part of geological study, soil testing is currently being done in Kathmandu, Nuwakot and Rasuwa. A study is being done to extract the underground soil by drilling at the possible location of the railway line. "There is less level land in the place where the railway is to be built, there are more mountains," he said, "which is why we have to build a lot of big and long bridges and tunnels."
Officials say that after the completion of the feasibility study, all subjects will come. "It will take more time to drill, the same work is being done," he said It was also discussed. Keshav Kumar Sharma, Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, said that the technician involved in the study team had raised the matter about the small problems encountered during the study and was informed that they were ready to coordinate for their solution.
'All soil testing is not done only in labs in Nepal. We have to take China for that. Therefore, the issue of visa and forest and park problems for the technical team to come and go was also raised in the meeting,' he said, 'we have informed that we are ready to facilitate the necessary.' Time to study till June 2083. After the
study is completed, the study report prepared by the technical team will be presented in the presence of concerned ministries, departments and various agencies. It will be discussed. The Chinese team that came to Nepal in December 2079 to study the feasibility of the railway completed the first phase of the study in January 2080. The study work should be completed within 42 months from the date of
. As it is a feasibility study, it will know the construction cost, time and total distance of the railway. The feasibility study will also determine how many tunnels, bridges and stations are required on the railway. Later, during the construction, the detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared and the work will be progressed.
It is estimated that the construction of the railway will cost 2 billion 71 billion 368 million rupees. According to the preliminary study, the distance of the route from Rasuwagadhi to Kathmandu will be 72 km. The pre-feasibility study of this railway was done in November 075. During the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Nepal in October 2016, it was agreed to start the feasibility study. During the visit of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to Nepal in March 2078, a memorandum of understanding was signed on the feasibility study. Accordingly, the work was carried forward.
