Due to the lack of proper management of containers, containers have again been damaged at the Sirsia dry port. Currently, the port complex is empty and filled with cargo containers. On Thursday, there are 2,755 containers including 1,765 empty ones and 990 cargo containers in the port complex.
Kamal Gyawali, head of Intermodal Transport Development Committee Birgunj, said that apart from Konkar, a sister organization of Indian Railways, other private sector companies also bring containers to railway racks from Indian ports and the 'rotation system' operated by mutual agreement between them is not effective.
'On the one hand, there is a tendency for cargo containers to come continuously and empty containers do not return at the same rate,' he said, 'on the other hand, the rotation system operated by private sector companies has not been effective due to the tendency of importers not to take cargo containers on time and also to return empty containers on time. .'
At this port, apart from Konkar, Pristine, DP World, Hind Terminals, Box Trans and other companies bring rail racks from Kolkata, Haldia and Visakhapatnam ports in India and bring back empty containers. 5 companies take turns bringing rail racks carrying freight containers and returning empty containers. Even though these companies operate this system in mutual agreement, some of the railway racks go back without carrying empty containers, so there is no necessary coordination between the process of container entry and exit. One rack can carry 90 empty or freight containers at a time.
Dhan Bahadur Baruwal, head of the customs office at the port, said that after the problem escalated, there was an agreement to send empty rail racks from India to return the empty containers in the port to the Indian port in coordination with the railway rack transporter companies and shipping line companies at the initiative of the Nepali Consulate General in Kolkata. "The DG of the Customs Department has taken the initiative to find a solution to the problem by discussing with the Intermodal Transport Development Committee and the officials of the Pristine Valley Dry Port Company," he said. "This problem will be solved within a few days."
The capacity of the Sirsia dry port is only 1,500 containers. In such a situation, the complexity of the management of the yard also increases when the capacity of the container is almost double.
