Video sharing platform Tiktok is going to ban beauty filters and body filters for users aged 13 to 18 years. Imad Zafar, Global Communications Representative of ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is going to adopt such a policy keeping in mind the mental health of children and teenagers.
Zafar, who was present in Kathmandu for the Tiktok Safety Ambassador Program organized by Tiktok on Saturday evening, informed that the company is going to implement a new policy on beauty and body filters globally. He said that the company's opinion is that teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 are not mature enough to make decisions about the effects of using such filters. "We are implementing such a policy globally," he said, "as teenage children are not aware of the mental effects of such filters, we are prepared to block them from using this feature in our app."
In the coming days, children of that age will not be able to use beauty filters such as making their eyes bigger, increasing the thickness of their lips, making their skin look smoother, and changing their skin color. The popular feature within the app like 'Bold Glamour' which can change the features of the face will not be available for this group .
However, Bytedance mentions that funny filters are available, such as attaching animal ears or dog noses to the face. "Keeping the Tiktok community safe is one of our highest priorities," said Zafar, adding, "Raising awareness about mental health is a special concern of ours." For this we also have a separate internal resource .'
Zafar informed that Tiktok will organize various events in Nepal and South Asia in the coming days regarding digital security and awareness. In the 'TikTok Safety Ambassador Programme', content creators discussed digital literacy, online safety and creating a healthy digital environment.
