Santosh Koirala and Ashok Sherchan have been nominated as presidents of Nepal Bankers Association, the umbrella organization of commercial banks. Koirala, the Chief Executive Officer of Machhapuchhre Bank, is currently the Vice President of the Bankers Association and Sherchan, the Chief Executive Officer of Prabhu Bank, is an executive member.

The 38th annual general meeting of the association will be held on January 3. The general assembly will elect three members including the chairman and vice-chairman. For the last 13 years, the vice-president has automatically become the president in the association. However, this time two candidates have been nominated.

If one person does not step back, there will be an election for the president . However, the former president of the association and most of the members are of the opinion that the leadership should be selected by consensus. Some have said that the former presidents should take the initiative for the selection of leadership by consensus.

Now the chairman, vice-chairman and three members of the association are vacant . However, as of Thursday, only two candidates have been nominated for the presidency. The deadline to submit nominations is next Monday.

Kiran Kumar Shrestha from Rashtriya Commercial Bank and Deepak Kumar Dey from Nepal SBI Bank are vacant since the term of office has expired. There should be a new arrangement in these positions. Similarly, the Chief Executive Officer of Everest Bank, Sudesh Khaling, has also completed one term in the Bankers Association. There is a provision that the executive member of the association can sit for two consecutive terms . However, for that too, the nomination must be registered.
