Labor, Employment and Social Security Minister Sharatsingh Bhandari has asked the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM) to take the initiative to make a labor agreement between the source and destination countries in order to address the international standards of labor matters.
In a meeting with Joseph Samuel Appiah, director of the IOM headquarters in Geneva, who is on a two-day visit to Nepal, Labor Minister Bhandari stressed the need for a labor agreement to establish the rights of Nepali workers according to international standards through the joint efforts of the Nepalese government and IOM.
Nepal has signed bilateral labor agreements with 12 labor destination countries. Some labor contracts are in the process of being revised. A labor agreement is needed to cover the steps from the protection of Nepali workers, guarantee of social security and transparent recruitment process to reintegration," said Kaviraj Upreti, assistant spokesperson of the Ministry of Labor, quoting Labor Minister Bhandari. Nepal has signed labor agreements with Qatar, Jordan, UK, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, Japan, Malaysia, Bahrain, Republic of Korea, Germany and Romania.
Labor Minister Bhandari proposed that we should collaborate to create a strategy to prevent the unethical recruitment process to eliminate the exploitation of Nepali workers. "There is a need for IOM's technical support to increase the capacity of Nepal's labor administration structure, data management, monitoring and policy making more effectively," he said, "to ensure transparency and fair treatment of workers by creating appropriate standards for manpower companies that facilitate the recruitment process of workers without fraud." We are ready to cooperate to develop a system of dealing with it.' "I have made a plan to strengthen the employment service center by developing the capacity to conduct all employment-related work," he said, "coordinating with all donor agencies to contribute to labor migration and internal employment."
Madhes, Karnali and According to Labor Minister Bhandari, efforts are being made to evacuate the citizens of Sudurpaschim Province from high risk. "I have advanced the program to provide employment to the citizens of these areas where unemployment and poverty rates are high," he said. In the
meeting, IOM Director Appiah praised Nepal's initiatives in the field of labor migration. "We appreciate the policy initiatives taken by the government of Nepal in the field of labor migration," he said, "we are ready to support transparent recruitment process, proper management of data and labor contracts."
Along with Appiah, Head of IOM Nepal Helen Force, Head of Immigration and Development Branch of IOM Nepal Prajwal Sharma participated in the courtesy call.
