The workers have started an indefinite sit-in from Sunday at the entrance of the five-star Tiger Palace Resort located in Tilottama-17, demanding the implementation of the agreement reached seven months ago with the management of the casino operation.
SHL Management Services (KTM) Pvt Ltd, which has been operating casinos in Shangrila and Tiger Palace Resort in Kathmandu, and the trade union have been on a sit-in since Sunday morning, demanding the resolution of the dispute and the implementation of a separate agreement on 13 January 2018.
Indian tourists were not allowed to enter the resort all day on Sunday due to the workers' strike. The Indian tourists who came in their own vehicles reached the gate and returned from the main gate after not getting entry. The workers who were present with cooking gas and stoves said that they will continue their strike until their demands are met. They are sitting on dharna by spreading mats at the entrance. No one is allowed to enter the resort. Workers say that exiting the resort is not obstructed.
After non-resident Nepalis took over the management, the resort is operating in the same condition. The resort says that tourist arrivals have stopped due to the movement of casino workers, which has become a center of attraction for Indian tourists.
Chitra Bhandari, the coordinator of United Labor Struggle Committee, said that 60 workers working in the casino in Tilottma's Tiger Palace Resort complex and 209 workers working in the casino operating in Shangrila Hotel in Kathmandu are participating in the sit-in. He said that the sit-in will continue until the agreement is implemented. "According to the order of the labor court, it was agreed to pay the rate of 165,000 rupees per worker," he said. Last December, a 14-point agreement was reached between the casino management, trade union, and joint struggle committee.
The resort management said that it is serious about the demand of the workers. An employee of the casino management said that since the casino has to be renovated every year, it is unable to hire workers permanently. The employee said that since the management side is discussing about the demand, they are ready to solve the problem.
According to him, the board meeting of SHL Management Services (KTM) Pvt. Ltd., registered on 062 March 12, decided not to renew the license of the casino operating in Shangrila and Tiger Palace on 080 Chait 12. The licenses of both casinos were subsequently revoked. After that decision, the management said that the entire business of SHL has been completely closed from July 1, 081.
