Students in Chitwan have shown black flags to Minister for Education and Sports Sasmit Pokharel. Minister Pokharel, who has been in Chitwan for a few days, was shown black flags by students as he was leaving for the airport to return to Kathmandu.
Chitwan's joint student organizations held placards in front of the Bharatpur airport gate, raised slogans against Minister Pokharel, displayed black flags, and released black balloons.
Sushil Karki Abdul, president of Akhil Krantikari Chitwan, said that the black flags were shown to the minister in protest because the government had imposed a 3 percent tax on students studying in private schools instead of reforming community schools. They raised slogans such as repealing the tax on education, banning student organizations is a dead end, making education accessible to all, and education is our right, not a business.
