The landslide in the Pangdure area of Bagmati Rural Municipality-3 in Lalitpur has completely blocked the Kanti Lokpath due to continuous rain. The risk of landslides has increased this time too with the rainy season.
According to the police, the movement of all vehicles coming and going from Chapagaun in Lalitpur to Hetauda has been stopped due to the landslide. Police have stated that vehicles could not be operated immediately after a large amount of mud and stones fell on the road. Despite efforts to open the road, the risk of landslides still exists due to continuous rain.
The Kanti Lokpath, which is an alternative route connecting Kathmandu to Makawanpur, has been one of the most risky roads during the rainy season. Even during normal rains, the problem of landslides, road collapse and stone falls has been recurring in various places. Especially in the areas around Pangdur, Gimdi in the Lalitpur region and the area from Bharyangdada and Thingan to Bagmati Bridge towards Makawanpur, the road is blocked immediately after normal rainfall.
With the closure of the Kanti Lokpath, passengers and drivers traveling between Hetauda and Kathmandu are facing problems. Especially due to the short distance, small and medium vehicles that choose this road are now forced to use alternative routes. The closure of the road has created a situation where both time and cost of travel have increased.
Although the problem of repeated closure of the Kanti Lokpath during the rainy season is old, locals complain that there has been no long-term solution to reduce risk. Stakeholders say that the same problem is repeated every year due to the inability to effectively manage landslide control, drainage management, wall protection and permanent management of weak terrain.
The police have urged people not to use this road except for essential work and to travel only after getting information about the road condition before traveling. Although efforts are ongoing to reopen the road, the time for full operation has not been determined until the weather improves. The District Administration Office, Makawanpur, has banned vehicles from using the road at night.
