The Zhangmu Port Administration of China has urged heightened vigilance in the Bhote Koshi River coastal areas on the Nepali side, citing a rapid rise in the water level of a glacial lake in the upper region.
According to Padmaraj Timalsina, chief of the Tatopani Immigration Office, the Zhangmu administration, in a message sent to Nepali security agencies and local administration on Wednesday evening, stated that due to continuous rainfall, the water level of the Boku Glacier on the Chinese side in the upper region is also rising rapidly.
“A warning has been issued that this could cause a sudden increase in the flow of the Bhote Koshi River and pose a risk of flooding,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Navaraj Nepal of the Armed Police Force Nepal No. 16 Headquarters, Sindhupalchok.
He said the Chinese administration has requested residents of the border area, riverbank communities, local administration, and security agencies to exercise necessary caution and immediately implement protective measures.
“The message sent by the Zhangmu administration states that the water level of the glacial lake in the upper region is rising rapidly. Since the water level of the Boku River could also rise soon, there is a risk of flooding. Please adopt necessary protective measures immediately,” Nepal said.
After receiving this message, the Nepali administration and security agencies have increased monitoring of the situation in the Bhote Koshi River coastal area and have urged local residents to remain alert. As the Bhote Koshi River is connected to China’s Boku Glacier, there is a possibility of sudden flooding in the lower coastal areas due to heavy rainfall in the upper region, rising glacial lake water levels, or the risk of a glacial lake outburst, so such warnings have been exchanged in the past as well.
