Elephant-affected citizens of Mechinagar Municipality-1, 2, 3 and 4 of Jhapa have submitted a four-point memorandum to the Prime Minister demanding control of the terror of wild elephants and ensuring the right to life of citizens.

The memorandum submitted to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers through Koshi Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki on Friday states that the loss of life and property of local residents due to elephants entering Nepal from the Indian border area is increasing. Citizens have demanded the government to take immediate effective steps, saying that they cannot bear further losses.

The memorandum demands that the movement of elephants entering Nepal from India should be stopped unconditionally, considering it a human-wildlife conflict. Similarly, it is mentioned that arrangements should be made to return the elephants to their habitats by using sirens, sounds and other technologies prevalent in the border area.

The citizens have also demanded an immediate halt to the proposed wildlife corridor from East Mechi Kinar to Koshi Tappu, claiming that it is impractical and against the biological balance. They have said that it will further endanger the settlements north of the East-West Highway in the future.

Similarly, the government has been drawn to the attention of the government to immediately stop tourism promotion activities based on elephant terror, saying that it is unfair to link wild animal attacks with tourism.

The memorandum also warns that if the demands are not addressed immediately, the citizens affected by elephants will be forced to launch a phased protest.
