Housing construction work has begun for 14 families of Panauti Municipality-12 in Kavre, which was affected by the floods and landslides of Asoj 2081.

Under the Nepal Flood Response Project of the Shanti Jana Artash Sewa Kendra in the district, housing construction work has been initiated for 14 families, giving priority to single women, disabled people, poor citizens, and senior citizens of Ward 12.

Habitat for Humanity Nepal and Panauti Municipality have provided financial support for the work. Under which Habitat for Humanity Nepal is providing 55 percent of the financial support, Panauti Municipality is providing 25 percent of the financial support, and 20 percent of the labor of locals. The center has officially started the housing construction work from Saturday. 40 teachers and staff of Kavre English Boarding School in Panauti, Kavre donated their labor for the construction work.

Project coordinator Sunita Tamang informed that it will cost Rs 650,000 to build a house, apart from labor. According to her, the house will be built using cement bamboo frame technology. The house will have 3 rooms and 1 toilet. She said that the construction work of the house has started from Saturday and the target is to complete it in Bhadra and hand it over to the affected people.

After the 2072 earthquake destroyed the house of local Kanchhi Khatri, Shanti Janardash Sewa Kendra and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) had built a house for her. After the house was washed away by the flood and landslide of Asoj in 2081, Kanchhi Khatri became homeless again.

Discussions were held at the community level to manage the house for Kanchhi, a single woman and physically disabled from birth. In the meantime, Shanti Janardash Sewa Kendra is going to build a house for her again. The foundation stone of Kanchhi Khatri's house was laid as part of the Shramdaan conducted by the center on Saturday.

Along with Kanchhi, housing work has been started for 14 families of Ward 12. Project Coordinator Tamang informed that the housing construction work will be carried out rapidly from next week. According to her, we are currently carrying out housing construction work by giving priority to single women, disabled people, poor citizens, and senior citizens. She said that after this work is completed, we have planned to expand the housing construction work considering the needs of the people.

Basanta Raj Nepal, Principal of Kavre English Boarding School, said that he participated in the construction work that started on Saturday as a volunteer. Ward Chairman of Panauti 12, Jayaram KC, urged to continue this type of work and expand it further.

The project is being implemented not only in Panauti 12 but also in Panchkhal Municipality under the same project, said Shankha Buddha Lama, chairman of Shanti Janaardash Sewa Kendra. According to him, 4 houses have been constructed in Panchkhal 8 and 1 house in Ward 9 using cement bamboo frame technology.
