A joint simulated disaster rescue exercise 'Hatemalo' was conducted on Thursday at the Khopasi Hydropower Center premises in Panauti Municipality-10, Kavrepalanchok.
The program demonstrated simulated exercises of various disaster incidents including fire control, rescuing people trapped in ditches and floods, and vehicle accidents. The Nepal Army's Meher Battalion Dhulikhel, District Police Office Kavre, Armed Police Force Nepal No. 15 Battalion Headquarters Panchkhal, Nepal Red Cross Society Kavre, and NCC Alumni Association Kavre participated in the exercise.
The disaster rescue exercise was organized by the District Disaster Management Committee and with the managerial support of Panauti Municipality. Addressing the program, Chief of the District Coordination Committee Deepak Kumar Gautam said that the need for programs such as preparedness and simulated exercises has increased as Kavre has been facing disasters for two consecutive years. He believes that such exercises will convey the message that not only oneself but also others can be kept safe during disasters.
Panauti Municipality Mayor Ram Sharan Bhandari recalled that the 2081 BS disaster caused huge loss of life and property in Panauti, and said that development and construction work was also affected by it. He emphasized that coordination and cooperation between all agencies are indispensable during disasters.
Similarly, District Disaster Management Committee Coordinator and Chief District Officer Gopal Kumar Adhikari said that Kavre district is at high risk of disasters. He said that it is necessary for citizens to be aware and prepared as disasters can strike at any time.
