Sunil Kumar Yadav of Bara Simraungarh was seriously injured in a road accident last November. Sunil, who was in the hospital for one and a half months, has been resting for three months, but it is still difficult to walk without support.

He has been working on the campaign for Chure conservation and river pollution control since 2074 BS, but he has not forgotten the injury. The 'Mechi Mahakali Public Awareness and Signature Campaign' has been started under his leadership since Jestha 1.

On the seventh day of walking from East Mechi, his team reached Bharatpur Chaubiskothi in Chitwan on Thursday morning. There, they spoke about the importance of forests and Chure. Locals showed solidarity by participating in the signature campaign. 'We will put our words on the streets. And then we will collect signatures. After reaching Mahakali, we plan to go to Kathmandu,' said Sunil.

He said that he would go to Kathmandu and submit the collected signatures to the ministers. 'If they listen to us first and understand the signatures, otherwise, a sit-in will start at Maitighar Mandala,' said Sunil. Last year, they sat on a sit-in for 72 days at Maitighar for the conservation of Chure. 'Last year, we started from Dhanusha and reached Kathmandu on foot via Chitwan. We walked for 25 days. We sat on a sit-in for 72 days. Finally, the government called us and presented our demands and plans for the conservation of Chure,' said Sunil.

He said that although some policies and regulations were made for the conservation of Chure, they were not implemented, so they started the campaign again this year. He said that they had collected problems related to the conservation of Chure in the districts. 'Even though the government has made policy arrangements, the problem has become acute due to the lack of implementation at the district level. We have been walking from Jhapa to Kanchanpur understanding the condition of Chure. We want to present a report to the government,' said Sunil.

He says that despite an 11-day walk from Birgunj to Kathmandu under Sunil's leadership to protect the Sirsia River, the problem has not been resolved. 'This time my physical condition is critical. The problems of the river, Chure and the environment are becoming more serious. I did not want to remain silent. I think the government will implement the issue if the people raise it during the summer,' he said.

Four of the 14 people in their team are women. 'We, who have gathered from Mechi, will reach Mahakali and Kathmandu. Let's see whether the government understands the state of the environment or not,' said Radha Chaudhary of Janakpur, a participant in the campaign. Along with Radha, Marani Devi Singh, Rita Mukhiya and Phool Kumari are also participating in this campaign. Radha said that if we don't stand up today to protect the Chure, tomorrow the Terai will become a desert and we will have to struggle to find water.
